Back to school: Team Bookends takes you on a trip down memory lane…

Earlier this week Team Bookends decided to go back to school. Only this time, we did it with the books that you actually want to be reading! With the first week back at school already over, we’ve been thinking about how fast time flies, and  we’ve been left feeling rather nostalgic for the good old days instead! So buckle up and join us take you on a trip down memory lane with some of our all-time favourite books about school days…

HARRY POTTER by J.K Rowling

In 1996 a young green-eyed boy with a lightning scar entered all of our lives and changed them forever. While most of us were devastated not to have received an owl from Hogwarts on our eleventh birthdays, we still love a sneaky revisit to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, quidditch and the most bad-ass, bearded headmaster in or out of literature.

MALORY TOWERS by Enid Blyton

This series of six novels follows Darrell Rivers from her first year at the Cornish seaside boarding school, Malory Towers to when she leaves at sixteen. Darrell begins her school life ingloriously at Malory Towers, determined to do well and make friends.   However she soon falls under the spell of the brilliant but mischievous Alicia Johns, neglecting her schoolwork in favour of fooling around and playing pranks on the staff.

JUST WILLIAM by Richmal Crompton

We’ve gone for a little 1920’s vintage with this classic thirty-nine book series featuring the original naughty boy, William Brown.

Eleven year old William is eternally scruffy and always frowning. He and his friends, Ginger, Henry and Douglas, call themselves the Outlaws, and meet at the old barn in Farmer Jenks’ field, with William being the leader of the gang, of course! The Outlaws are sworn enemies of the Hubert Lane-ites, and it’s a rivalry that breeds all sorts of trouble…

THE WORST WITCH by Jill Murphy

And we’re back to the world of witchcraft and wizardry with this one because let’s be honest, when you’re a kid there’s nothing fun about being normal is there?

Mildred Hubble is undoubtedly the worst witch at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches. Although well-intentioned, Mildred’s clumsy personality means she’s a walking, talking disaster most of the time. She makes it through each term (the span of each book) with the help of her best friends, the eternally sensible and rather rotund Maud Moonshine and the practical joker Enid Nightshade who is always getting them into trouble. Life at Miss Cackle’s Academy isn’t always easy for the girls, especially when they come up against their ultimate rival, the snobbish Ethel Hallow, and the terrifying teacher Miss Hardbroom.

ST CLARE’S by Enid Blyton

St. Clare’s boarding school for girls was praised by many-a-parent as “a very sensible sort of school”, when in fact it was a place of madcap schemes, games and jollity. This classic series of six books boasts some memorable characters, including the stuck up twins Pat and Isabel O’Sullivan, feather-headed Alison, mischievous French girl Claudine, circus-girl Carlotta, Don’t-Care Bobby, Sour-Milk Prudence, the Honourable Angela Favorleigh and “Mam’zelle Abominable.” These stories are packed full of tricks and jokes, midnight feasts, sports matches, thrilling rescues, and fun and friendship in true Enit Blyton style!
