Team Bookends’ Desert Island Books

If Team Bookends washed up on a desert island, which books would we want to have with us for company?

Alice

WOLF HALL: I’m a historical fiction nut, and Hilary Mantel’s incredible Thomas Cromwell novels improve on every reading.

WAR AND PEACE: because if I’m stuck on a desert island, I may finally buckle down!

BOSSYPANTS by Tina Fey: at once hilarious and inspiring. I’ll need cheering up after finishing WAR AND PEACE…

I’d need something fantasy-based so I could forget about my current situation and lose myself in another world. Something like Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo or Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. I’d also like something comforting, so would bring my go-to Harry Potter. And maybe a graphic novel? Saga is my favourite.

Harry Potter – obviously. One of the best books to curl up with when you need a little escapism.

Ballet Shoes –one of my favourite books as a child. My copy is so battered now but I could read this over and over.

I’d need some women’s fiction in my life – Lucy Diamond, Marian Keyes, Jojo Moyes or Jill Mansell –throw me one of these to read and I’ll happily set up camp on a desert island.

For the escapism and the nostalgia, and because my childhood self would hate me if I didn’t include it, I have to say Harry Potter. Can you get all seven books in one volume? I’m sure it exists somewhere.

Obviously I’d be remiss without one of our lovely authors, so I have to throw in I’ll Eat When I’m Dead by Barbara Bourland – because it’s so damn entertaining to read!

I recently read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, and I feel like this is a book I could re-read for years and find something new in it every time. So many amazing characters.

Again for the escapism, I’d take my copy of Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

And finally I’d have to include something like Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, to remind me of the society I’m secluded from! (I would definitely not do well on a Desert Island).
