What’s your favourite Christmas movie?

Now that we’ve had our first snow of the season and the nights are getting darker we think it’s about time to assume position on the sofa where we plan to stay until January. And you know what that means… time to indulge in a Christmas movie or three! In this latest Christmas post six superb authors tell us which one is their favourite…

Elizabeth Gill, author of Snow Angels

I love films especially  It’s a Wonderful Life.  James  Stewart is my favourite ever actor so I don’t really care what he does in the film as long as he’s in it. I do like Elf and all the lovely stuff that comes in cartoons. Can I have Ice Age?  And the follow ups. And the one about the left out penguin.  Films for children these days are so much better than anything else.  Also I like White Christmas.

Carmel Harrington, author of Cold Feet

My favourite movie to watch with the children is The Polar Express. We have a little silver bell, like the one in the movie and each year we ring it, saying, ‘I believe!’ It is simply magical. But my all time favourite Christmas movie is, It’s a Wonderful Life. I have watched this every Christmas Eve for decades now. And when I met my husband I introduced him to this tradition. Now, once the children are asleep and our last minute preparations are taken care off, we sit down with a Gin and Tonic and watch Jimmy Stewart do his thing. And somehow, now, in the world we are living in, It’s A Wonderful Life seems even more relevant. We need a world full of George and Mary Bailey’s.

My favourite Christmas movie is The Wizard of Oz. I know it isn’t set around Christmas at all, but it’s always shown at that time of year so it reminds me of sitting in my new pyjamas waiting with baited breath for it to come on.

I still love the movie, but my kids are now teenagers and refuse to watch it with me. But I still have the furries (my cat and dog) to keep me company. I’ll give Herbie the dog a Dentastix and Tom the cat can have a little bit of tuna! I’ll light the fire and I’ll be in my new pyjamas – hint, hint, kiddies and hubby!

Louise O’Neill, author of Asking For It

It’s impossible to choose just one favourite Christmas movie. I love It’s A Wonderful Life, Elf, Home Alone, and Muppet’s Christmas Carol.

Brief Encounter: I know it’s not technically a Christmas film, but it’s always on at this time of year and it’s my favourite movie of all time. The sense of nostalgia from the black and white images and Celia Johnson’s crystal cut vowels puts me in a state of timeless joy that I always associate with the Season. Well, timeless joy until the tears kick in, that is.

For me, Christmas is a time to press pause on the modern pressures of life and take time to enjoy what you have: there is nothing better than snuggling on the sofa with your loved ones, a belly full of delicious food, a glass of wine in hand and Brief Encounter on the TV.

Helen Wallen, author of Baby Boom!

Elf! And Home Alone a close second. I’m a child of the eighties! (I’m also one of ‘those’ people who starts watching and quoting from about mid November.)
