Team Bookends books to make you feel good

When you’re feeling down, the weather’s shocking and you need a little pick me up, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and a steaming hot mug of tea. Here at Bookends, we thought we’d share the books we reach for when we need some cheering up.

Start Your Day With Katie, Katie Piper

This is a gorgeous little book filled with 365 positive affirmations – one for every day of the year. Many of which were the little nuggets of advice that helped Katie Piper through her darkest moments, with words that inspired her to look towards the future and focus of finding happiness. It’s a great book to have on your desk to get you through those days where you need a bit of an extra kick! My favourite quote:

Jamie Oliver’s Comfort Food, Jamie Oliver

If you’ve ever eaten Jamie Oliver’s Duck Lasagne, or his Ultimate Shepard’s Pie – you’ll know what I’m talking about. This man is a genius, and everything he touches turns to deliciousness! With winter just around the corner, I’m already looking forward to dusting this bad boy off and indulging in something a little (or a lot) calorietastic. What could make you feel better?! – Jeska

A Closed and Common Orbit, Becky Chambers

The follow up to the ultimate feel good space adventure, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. It makes me happy because a) it’s all about finding yourself… in space b) the friendship between the two main characters is really sweet and inspiring, AND c) it’s out next month so soon everyone else will see how great it is!

So many books are filled with darkness and despair and though I do love a bit of that, sometimes you need a Becky Chambers book to make you smile – Fleur

Seven Steps to Happiness, Stella Newman

I cannot express how much I adored this book when I read it…and how desperate I was for a cheese toastie or two. What better book for #FeelGoodWeek than one about finding happiness in seven steps? Lenny encourages her friend to get involved with the new app HappyGuru, promising happiness by the end of it. There’s laughter, tears and a lot of cheese. My kind of book – Helena

The Hamilton Affair, Elizabeth Cobbs

I admit it: I’m a HUGE musicals fans and my current obsession is Hamilton, so I pounced on the chance to read The Hamilton Affair. For anyone who knows the musical there are a few surprises but Elizabeth Cobbs has done her research and this is definitely based more closely on historical fact. You can be swept away by Alexander and Eliza all over again! – Alice
