My Dream Holiday Destination…ft. Ruth Hogan, Katie Marsh and Natalie Meg Evans

From Hawaii to The Maldives and a museum tour with Stephen Fry…we asked three Bookends authors what their dream holiday destination would be.

Katie Marsh, author of This Beautiful Life

The Maldives or Mexico. If I just keep buying lottery tickets…

Ruth Hogan, author of the Richard and Judy Book Club pick Keeper of Lost Things

Venice in the Winter via The Orient Express

Natalie Meg Evans, author of The Wardrobe Mistress

Hawaii in the North Pacific. I want to surf the best rollers on the planet and investigate the Huna spiritual practices. A kahuna massage is on my bucket list. But, because I don’t like intense heat, I’d like to import the weather of Madeira during my stay. Madeira has one of the best climates in the world, of a fairly constant 21 degrees. With a breeze blowing the fragrance around, it’s cool enough to walk and appreciate the flowers.

Because I like to do something on my holidays, I’d like to import some Spanish Lucitano horses to ride. I’d also conjure up the pine woods and sandy tracks of the Vendée on France’s west coast. A group of like-minded friends and I could then ride during the cool part of the day, with the scent of pine needles to keep the flies away.

Can I please have three of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to as well? That includes the Villa Lorraine in Brussels, Rick Stein’s place in Padstow, and the little place whose name I never knew, a family affair on a busy road somewhere outside Arras in France, where I had the best fish ever.

Because this is my fantasy holiday, could I also have Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, The New York Met and London’s Serpentine Gallery flown over for a week or so. These are all museums I visited without enough time to do them justice. On this perfect holiday, I get to stroll round them in air conditioned comfort, with a lovely guide to explain the obscure items to me. Stephen Fry would be a good choice…I wonder if he’s free?
