Bookends Confessions: The books we’ve never read

As a team we live and breathe books, so it might be surprising to find out that there are still some bestsellers on our lists we’ve yet to indulge in. Here are just a few of the teams shameful confessions…

To Kill A Mockingbird

Fleur – To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee

I am very embarrassed to say that I am possibly the only person in the world who’s never read To Kill a Mockingbird. I can’t even tell you what it’s about, though I suspect that it’s not actually a how to guide on songbird massacre.  I could blame the fact that we never covered it at school, but, really, there’s no excuse. The shame!

The Miniaturist

Abbie – The Miniaturist, Jessie Burton

Don’t tell anyone, but I’ve not read The Miniaturist yet. I think I might be the only person in the industry/country/stratosphere that hasn’t. I really want to get to it, though judging by the size of my TBR pile, I think the projected reading time will be somewhere on 2040!

Pride and Prejudice

Vicky – Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

My confession is a big one. I’ve never read the classics. Not a single Bronte, no du Maurier, and no Austen. That’s not to say I have anything against them – not at all. The countless, brilliant TV and film adaptations have swept me up entirely with their stunning storytelling, but the books have always eluded me. Put off by the dryness of school English Literature lessons I seem to have been averted for life. Though fortunately the rest of my voracious reading habits escaped unscathed…

1984-orwell-web

Jeska 1984, George Orwell

Most people read this while they were at school – and as I just confessed that I hadn’t I was met with a barrage of appalled wails from my colleagues to the tune of ‘how on earth have you not read 1984?!’ For me this has become one of those books that I know I probably should read…yet I’m pretty sure I never will read, and I’ve not got a good excuse as to why not! Forgive me literature fans, for I have sinned.

The Kite Runner

Helena – The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini

My friends have learnt never to lend me a book, this book has been sat amongst my shelf of ‘books to read’ for more than a few years now. I’m sure my friend thinks it has been lost in my never ending pile of books. I have promised myself I will get to it…one day.
